# DomWhisper

> DomWhisper turns every web page into a comment layer. Highlight any text or click any DOM element, write a whisper that is either private ("Mine") or public ("World"), and start — or join — a discussion at that exact spot. Whispers reappear every time you revisit the page, and public whispers are aggregated into community rankings of the most-discussed websites on the web.

## What DomWhisper Is

DomWhisper turns every web page into a comment layer. Instead of holding discussions in a separate app, whispers live on the page itself and are restored automatically whenever you return to it. Two ways to start a discussion are supported:

- **Point annotations**: click any DOM element on a page to attach a comment to it. The comment is bound to a coordinate plus an element fingerprint, so it stays attached to the same element across re-renders.
- **Selection annotations**: select text (shortcut: Option+W) and the extension highlights the selection and matches it back by context when the page changes.

Every whisper has a visibility setting:

- **Mine** — private to you, visible only in your own sidepanel.
- **World** — public, visible to everyone, and aggregated into the community rankings.

## Features

- **Sidepanel** — open the DomWhisper sidepanel from the toolbar to browse "My Anchors" (private annotations) or "Community" (public discussions on the current URL).
- **Annotate Anywhere** — highlight text on any page or click any DOM node to drop a discussion point without leaving your reading flow.
- **Persistent highlights** — whispers reproduce exactly on your next visit, even on dynamic pages.
- **Knowledge-base export** — personal annotations are organized automatically and export as Markdown to Obsidian, Notion, or .md files.
- **Public rankings** — public whispers across the community feed ranking pages that show which websites people discuss the most, updated hourly.

## Website Rankings

DomWhisper aggregates public whispers into public ranking pages:

- **/rankings** — hub page listing every ranking dimension.
- **/rankings/domains** — the top 100 most-discussed websites of all time, with live counts. Supports short-window views (last 7 days / last 24 hours).
- **/domains/{host}** — a profile page per website, e.g. https://domwhisper.com/domains/react.dev. It shows how many public whispers the site has, how many distinct users discussed it, and a list of the actual whispers. Pages only become indexable once a site passes a minimum public-whisper threshold.

## How to Install

1. Visit the [DomWhisper extension page](https://domwhisper.com/extension) and install the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Click the browser toolbar icon, or press Option+W to enter highlight mode.
3. Select text or click an element, write your whisper, and choose Mine (private) or World (public).

## Language

English is the default language. A Chinese version of the site is available under the /zh prefix, e.g. https://domwhisper.com/zh.
